Ancient Mayan artefacts, of great cultural and spiritual value, are returned within the framework of the 4th Native Spirit Festival 2010

Lewes, East Sussex, England

31st October 2010
A series of archeological ancient Mayan artefacts, dating at least 800 years, were returned to a delegation of Mayan indigenous members during their visit to England within the framework of the 4th Native Spirit Festival.  The Festival promotes indigenous cultures and takes place every year in England and Spain.

The items had been part of a private museum collection and given as a present to a young British man who had kept them for over 30 years.

The keeper of these rare Mayan artefacts considered it necessary to return them to the people they originated from in consideration of their spiritual and cultural values.
The Mayan indigenous delegation received them with great gratitude and were deeply moved by such gesture and marked “ the importance of the spirit of the people who kept the pieces and now returned them after 30 years feeling the items had to be returned.”

The Mayan indigenous delegation was part of a larger group of elders visiting Europe within the encounters organised by The Native Spirit Foundation. The indigenous representatives came to deliver an urgent message to the western societies: the imperative need to defend and reconnect with Mother Earth to avoid an ecological disaster of immense consequences.

Devuelven Piezas Arqueológicas de Gran Importancia para la Cultura Maya en el Marco del Festival Native Spirit 2010

Lewes, East Sussex, England
